Most of the restaurants I work with have very simple and error prone processes in place for tracking inventory, personnel, and sometimes even income. Resorting to pencil and paper for business critical information used to be just fine, but with today's shrinking profit margins and cutthroat competitive environment something as important as inventory can not rely on the counting skills of your employees.

I looked on the web and to my surprise, besides for excel spread sheets, I could not find an affordable, simple inventory application. They were all either too expensive, or had clunky, hard to understand interfaces that tried to do too much.

A friend of mine needed something to make tracking his inventory easier. Specifically, he wanted to track bottles of various spirits in and out of the bar. Thus ScanIntory was born.

Written using Visual Studio 2005 Express (C#), I was very glad to see that Microsoft is very serious about giving developers (even those with meager resources) the tools that they need to write next generation applications for the windows platform.

The idea behind the software is this: For about $250 a business can buy a really nice bar code scanner. The model we were looking at is a symbol LS9203-7NNK0100D. When new inventory is brought in, employees can count the number of bottles, and use a quantity input, or just scan each bottle separately. The same goes for when inventory is used up.
